Wellness Live

While New Year's resolutions might be fun and motivating, many people end up trying to accomplish too much too quickly. Setting small, focused health and wellness goals can give you a sense of control and strength, which is especially important if you find your newsfeed full of articles about inflation, scarcity, and these “uncertain times.” But even when global events seem dire, there are still many ways that we can support our mental and/or physical health. Whether it be through a change in diet or daily routine—every little bit counts. Here are a couple of simple ways that you can take control of your health as we move into 2023.*

Change up your diet

Looking to support your gut? Lack of variety in your diet might be affecting you more than you know. The number of different foods that make up our daily meals has shrunk substantially over the past century. Trying to incorporate culturally diverse fruits and vegetables, as well as a range of different carbohydrates, is an easy way to get a variety of micronutrients—and might just spark the discovery of your new favorite dish. Grains like millet and sorghum, as well as sweet potatoes, are fantastic carb options that you might not be reaching for. Setting dietary diversity as one of your health and wellness goals for 2023 can get you started on the path towards feeling like your best self.*

Try low-impact exercises

Getting fit is one of the most common New Year’s health and wellness goals, and running is one of the more popular exercises that people take up to try and get there. Unfortunately, if you run too much too quickly, your joints might start to protest. Low-impact exercise like swimming and bicycling can be a great alternative to a jog. Swimming works more muscle groups, and cycling can be a way to travel while getting your sweat on.*

Set consistent work hours for yourself

If you’re able to work from home, you might be familiar with the struggle of constantly planning a daily routine. Getting up and getting things done can be tough without discipline and preparation. If your work is project based, setting aside a certain number of hours a day for work and work alone can help you get into a flow more easily. Using an app to set reminders for yourself, or even just setting a timer for how long you need to work for, can make holding yourself accountable a bit easier.*

Make sure you’re getting quality sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep can be the difference between a good and a bad day—and getting proper amounts of high-quality sleep is key to a healthy lifestyle. If you’re keeping yourself up late scrolling through your phone or binging a new show, putting down your devices and going to bed a little earlier each night can do wonders. Those who find themselves tired even after a full night of rest may be having trouble falling into a deep sleep. We offer additional sleep tips in our article How to Get More Deep Sleep, but you can also try a supplement like Sleep Science® Melatonin to help get you ready for the rest you need to feel your best.*

Give yourself plenty of you-time

The past few years have been rough for the mental wellness of so many—oftentimes the best thing you can do is just take a break. Sticking to a schedule can be great for productivity, but sacrificing your happiness to keep to the routine isn’t worth it. Prioritize yourself in 2023 by making simple health and wellness goals, sticking to them, and taking some time for your own well-being. You’re worth it.*
